Stanley Rother was born into a family of hard-working Oklahoma farmers. In 1968, five years into his priesthood, Fr. Rother requested reassignment to a mission in rural Guatemala. There he served the poor, translated Scripture and provided education programs via radio. But across Guatemala during that time, Catholics were being killed amidst a civil war. Fr. Rother knew the risks, but believed deeply that ????the shepherd cannot run.?????¬ On the night of July 28, 1981, men snuck into his home and shot the holy priest.
