In 1717, three Brazilian fishermen went to catch fish for a festival. They prayed to Our Lady for help, but caught nothing. Finally, they found in their nets a wooden statue of the Immaculate Conception. Lowering their nets again, they found them full of fish. The fishermen brought the statue home, and as word of the miracle spread, Our Lady of Aparecida (meaning "she who appeared") became loved throughout Brazil.
