The son of a Belgian shoemaker, John Berchmans served and studied in the household of a priest, making pilgrimages to a nearby Marian shrine as often as he could. Despite his father's objections, John discerned his vocation and become a Jesuit novice. He was impulsive but kind and friendly, and went about his ordinary tasks with extraordinary love. In 1621, John died before his ordination at the age of 22.
